A JUDGE’S SUICIDE
SHOT IN THE HEAD. SEQUEL TO INFLUENZA ATTACK. United Press Assn.—Elec. T.el. Copyright (Received /April 27, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, April 26. Mr Justice Ate Cardie was found dead in his London house with a bullet wound in liis head and a revolver nearby.
A servant heard a shot and rushed to the room where lie found the judge lying on the floor.
Mr Justice McCardie was convalescing from two severe attacks of influenza, and was still suffering, the after effects.
Mr Justice 'McCardie, known as the “Bachelor” judge, was 63 years of age. lie was called to the bar in 1894 and made rapid progress in his profession, becoming at last the most popular of,junior counsel In England, lie was raised direct from the junior bar to the bench and was created a judge of the High Court In 1916. It was later established that Mr Justice McCardie was shot with a sporting gun which was held between his knees and a piece of string was attached to the trigger, the other end of which was held In his hand. The late judge had occupied a suite In Queen Ann mansions, St. Jame’s, for 25 years. A housemaid heard a shof at 4.30 p.m. and found him crumpled in a chair and bleeding from a wound in the head. Mr Justice McCardie recently said: “I am depressed with the after effects of influenza,” but a member of the hotel staff said he seemed in his usual charming and happy mood at lunch time.
Mr Justice .McCardie was a keen ■sportsman and kept several guns at his rooms.
The body was removed to the Westminster mortuary and an Inquest will he held on Friday.
