WAGES AND RATES. The council, towards the close of the year, passed the necessary special order to raise a loan of £7300 to enable the benefits of sewer drainage to he made available in the outlying areas of Hamilton East and Frankton, and authority to proceed with the loan has been received from the Government,” stated the town clerk (Mr W. L. Waddel) in a report to the Borough Council last evening. ‘‘The rate of interest is restricted to 4i per cent., however, and it is very doubtful whether the council will be able to borrow at that rate. “Inquiries are being made in several directions. It is interded that, other thngs being equal, a certain amount of preference in employment on these works will be granted to those ratepayers who have been working under the No. 5 scheme and who will allot part of their wages to the oouncil m reduction -of their rates”
