SERIOUS CHARGE.
NOLLE PROSEQUI ENTERED. A nolle prosequi has been entered in the case in which a Maori, Thomas Mulligan, was charged at the last session of the Supreme Court in Hamilton with Hie rape of two Maori girls. It will be recalled that ttie jury disagreed in two trials, and in the normal course a third trial would be ordered. However, the Attorney-General, whose powers have been delegated to the Crown Solicitor in this connection, has consented to a nolle prosequi being entered. This has the effect of staying proceedings against the accused. It is pointed out that a nolle presequi is not equivalent to an acquittal, for in rare cases the accused may again he proceeded against.
