CARMELITE NUNS
COMMUNITY TO BE FOUNDED. SEVEN SISTERS ARRIVE. Seven sisters of t.hc Carmelite Order of Nuns arrived in Wellington Jiy tho Makura from Sydney, in order lo found a community of the order in New Zealand. The community is to settle in Christchurch, where for the present they will be temporarily accommodated at Mount Magdala. Their names wero Sisters Dryden, Keogh, Rae, Tobin, MeCoskcr, Rac, Jordan. The Carmelite Order of Nuns was founded in France in 1T52, but the Carmelites are three centuries older than that, a body of mendicant friars taking their name from Mount Carmel, where the order was first established in lloG. The Saracens persecuted them, and they made their way to Europe, founding monasteries and convents in various countries, many uf the institutions existing to this day.
