ANNUAL MEETING. OPENING EVENT'TO DESERT FIRE. BERYL LATOUR WINS THE CUP. (By Telegraph.—Special to Times.) ■ NGARUAWAHIA, Saturday. The Ngaruawahia Racing Club’s annual meeting (non-totalisator) was held to-day In fine weather. There was a good attendance and the tiack was hard. Following are the results: — HOROTIU PLATE. From a good start Desert Fire was the first to hit the front, showing the way out from Golden Lady, Ruby Meteor and Benighted. Golden Lady was in charge crossing the top and was accompanied by Desert Fire with Ruby Meteor, Benighted and Queen Nassau several lengths hack. Desert Fire caught Golden Lady at the straight entrance and going on she beat her by a neck. Safe Bank came with a rattle on the outer and finished third half a length behind Golden Lady. Silver Wattle was fourth with Queen Nassau and Ruby Meteor next. Time, 1.4.

Roylette failed to get away and British Metal led past the stands the first time from Roylette (who was making up’ground fast at this stage) , Alexis (saddle) and Cogent. British Metal broke here. Edna Worthy was the pilot along the back from Alexis and a big gap back to Roylette. Alexis showed the way to the home turn with Edna Worthy and Cogent handy. Alexis stayed on to win comfortably by half a length from Edna Worthy who beat Cogent by a neck. Roylette was fourth, then came Pukemiro and Cleao. Time, 3.38.

Illuminclli got the best of the start, but racing across the top Welcome Lu was in front of Memoir, Maunga King and lllum'inelli. Maunga King headed Memoir across the back, but Welcome Lu piloted Maunga King and Rose Lupin into the straight, with Illuminelli coining fast on the inside. Rose Lupin came through to get the verdict by half a length from Illuminelli, who was a similar distance In front of Welcome Lu. Maunga King was fourth, followed by Raceful, Memoir and County Down. Time, 1.22.

Beryl Latour was prominent early and racing past the stands for the first time was leading Illumination, Loombination and Pelting. Along the back Beryl Latour was still In charge and was bowling along well in front of Illuminagh, Pelting and Loomblnatlon. Beryl Latour was three lengths clear of Pelting into the straight, with Loomblnatlon and Illuminagh following. Pelting looked to have the race won at the distance, hut Beryl Latour finished determinedly to take the verdict by the comfortable margin of one and a-half lengths. Loombination was half a length behind Pelting third, with Illuminagh well back. Time, 2.13 2-5.
