WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

AT NAWTON—ROTOKAURI. The monthly meeting of the Nawton —Rotokauri Women's Institute was held on Tuesday, November 29. The president presided over a fair attend* ance of members. The meeting opened by repeating the Women’s Institute Creed, after which Messrs. Marshall and Hunter, first-aid men from Frankton, gave an interesting talk on simple accidents and their treatment. They also showed how to bandage a broken collar-bone, arm and leg. We were sorry Mr Marshall could not speak longer, but hope to hear him again. The business of the meeting was then proceeded with. The results of the garden party were made known to the members and proved very gratifying. The roll call “simple childish remedies” was well responded to/. A picture-building competition was then judged. Mrs Craw rshaw came first and Mrs Waters second. Community singing was indulged in,' and afternoon tea, served by the hostesses, Mesdames Barnsdale, Elliott, White and Waters. The meeting closed by -singing the National Anthem.

AT KAIPAKI

The members of the Kalpaki Institute spent a very interesting and instructive day In the hall on Wednesday last, when Mrs Harrison, an organising demonstrator for the Women's Institutes, gave a special demonstration in all kinds of arts and crafts. She also had on exhibition a beautiful array of thrift articles, including wool and felt rugs, sugar bag and binder twine mats, baskets made from pine needles, etc.; also cured skins, soft toys and various other things, all beautiful and very inexpensive to make. The demonstration was thoroughly enjoyed by the members, who felt ■ their day had been well spent, and a hearty vote of thanks, proposed by the president (Mrs H. Graham), was accorded Mrs Harrison. Luncheon and afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mrs A. Steenson, Mrs A. Fisher, the Misses M. Speake, A. Graham and A. Speake.

THE OHAUPO BRANCH

The annual meeting of the Ohaupo branch of the Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday. A review' of the work showed a most satisfactory position.

As a result of points allotted for various competitions, Mrs Strange won the prize presented for most points scored.

The election of officers resulted: — President Mrs H. Fletcher; vicepresident, Mrs W. Truman: trea-surer,-Mrs J. Anderson; secretary. Mrs A. Wiley; committee, Mesdames Bell, Sim.. Sanson. Misses Turnwald, Mitchell and Tltmarsh. Mrs Goodwin, Mrs McKinnon and Miss Tarr, three visiting members from Kaipaki, gave a most amusing and entertaining play entitled “ The Mechanical Maid." A cordial vote of thanks was accorded the retiring president, Mrs Truman, whose untiring efforts had gone a long way toward making the branch the success that it has been. The hostesses were Mesdames Bold, C. Ranby, Batters and Miss Turnwald.
