WAIKERIA ESCAPEES.
ONE PRISONER RECAPTURED. AFTER DESPERATE STRUGGLE. WHAKATANE, Wednesday. The search for the- escaped prisoners Clayton and Morton was continued. The men broke into Mr Kirk's house yesterday afternoon, and secured supplies of meat and bread. 'Civilians patrolled the roads in the vicinity, and at ten o’clock last night observed two men on the road. ■Constable Johnsen surprised and grabbed Morton, who hit the constable in the face with a billy, and in the ensuing struggle both went over a bank. The constable overpowered and handcuffed Morton. 'Constable Breed grappled with Clayton, who wriggled away, regaining the bush, and is still at large. (Morton was the leader of the pair, being a motor-driver and mechanio and having a knowledge of the district. The police are still searching for Clayton. THE SECOND MAN RECAPTURED. CHASED BY THE POLICE. (By Te'enranh —/."O'-'aMno.) WHAKATANE, Wednesday. Arthur Clayton, who escaped from Waikeria on Saturday, was captured this afternoon in the vicinity of Waimana after a long chase on foot by the police. A settler noticed a stranger in the bush on his property, and notified the police, who we're searching thereabouts.
Immediately on being discovered Clayton ran through the Waimana village and across the river, and w'as oaptured by the police in an exhausted condition.
