BEEF RATES HIGHER.

SHEEP IN STEADY DEMAND LAMBS AND PIGS BRIGHTER. FAT STOCK AT WESTFIELD. An improvement in the demand l'or beef was a feature of the weekly Westfield fat stock sale yesterday, and '.Trees showed an advance. There was a smaller yarding than usual of both ox and cow beef, while the greater portion of the offering comprised the smaller sorts, w-hich have lately been in demand with buyers, who have shown a preference for light and middle-weight cattle. The quality of most lines was good and as a result the rise in values was general, averaging about Is per 1001 b. Extra choice ox sold at 18s, compared with 17s last week, while choice ox and prime cow and heifer beef both realised up to 17s, compared with 16s 6d and 16s respectively at the previous sale. The yarding of sheep was about average, and there was again a steady demand. Values remained firm in all classes, rates for good quality wethers and hoggets showing a rising tendency, while ewes were slightly easier. There was again keen competition for lambs, which were penned in very large numbers, exceeding the heavyyarding of last week. With good bidding, which was maintained throughout the sale, values remained about the same level as last week. All the lambs offered were of a high quality, the better lines being keenly sought. There was a smaller entry of calves, which met with erratic bidding, the demand being spasmodic. Values, however, were generally equal to those ruling at the last sale and the top price realised, 555, was 4s higher than the previous week. The pig market showed a brighter tone, keen interest being maintained throughout. Although the yarding was heavy, competition remained good, and as a result average values for porkers improved, while baconers sold about late rates. Stores also sold well. Comparison of Quotations.
