BREACH OF AWARD

AMERICAN FIRM FINED. “ WORST EVER BEFORE COURT.” (From a Correspondent.) SYDNEY, Nov. 22. Tho Chief Industrial Magistrate (Mr E. Prior) imposed a fine of £2O on Warner Bros.’ First National Pictures for having committed a breach of the Clerks’ Award. It was slated that the ’company, on receipt of instructions from New York, suggested that the employees should take a week's holiday without pay. An officer of the Department of Labour and Industry advised the secretary of the. company that it would be a breach of the award. However, when the employees received their weekly salaries there was a circular in the envelope, and they agreed to return the money to the company and accept a week’s holiday. It. was pointed out on behalf of the company that the week would dispense with rationing or retrenchment.

Air Prior described the breach as the worst that had come before the Court. It was the worst form of duress.
