Maoris Westernised.—Mr Maurice Grauer, of the United States, who is touring New Zealand, expresses disappointment at what ho terms “the Westernisation of tho Maori.” In a letter to the Southland News Mr Grauer stales: “in regard -to buy search for the native life of the Maori as is natural to him all I found was tho natural beauty of tho geysers and mud-pools. The Maoris I found were Westernised to a degree and they have lost every appearance of tho Maori of yore. Only in my imagination can I picture the wonderful story of Tutanekai and Jlinemoa and hear tho clatter of the oars of the famous cauoes. The outer appearance of the Maori has changed beyond recognition and I wonder whether lie is still Maori at heart.”
