Government Competition Criticised. —Criticism of Government competition in the real estate business was voiced at the lasi meeting of the Auckland committee of the Beal Estate Institute. It was stated that recently the staff of the local office of the State Advances Department had. been increased from four to 12 and that the officers had been provided with a motor-car each in order that the rents might be collected by civil servants instead of land agents, as formerly. Members pointed out‘that, whereas a. number of agents made small commissions out of this work, it was now to be done at an immensely increased cost by Government officers. Several speakers referred to the keen competition of the Publio»Trustce, the Crown Lands and oilier departments. The competition was unjust, difficult to combat and it was impossible for business to recover in the face of so much political interference.
