INTERESTING CEREMONY. At Chudlcigh Estate on Saturday a unique marriage ceremony took place, the principals being Miss Kartari Singh, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Phuman Singh, for some years residents of the district, and Mr Surain Singh, who lately arrived from India. .As Sikhs from the Punjab, the parents decided to follow I lie customary marriage riles of their religion, the engagement of the young couple having been arranged by the parents of Ihc bride and bridegroom some years ago. On Friday evening when the sun had set. Hic bridegroom and his parly were met at the gates of his prospective bride’s home by her father, and “The Orantlii," or ofllcialing priest, Air Karin Singh, or Pacroa. They were duly welcomed, and songs of a sacred nature were sung ivy the company. Later llie room was decorated for the marriage. At 2.30 on Saturday morning the whole company listened to the Granthi reading from sacred writings. At noon the general marriage feast and rejoicings look place, the To Aroha Municipal Band, specially engaged, rendering appropriate selections. After 'luncheon the bride’s father thanked llie large assemblage for their good wishes and the honour they had done his daughter by attending her marriage. A procession was formed lo the gate, and a party with over twenty cars proceeded with the band to To Aroha, where large numbers thronged Whilakcr Sheet. In the evening a large gathering was held at Mr Phuman Singh's residence, where community singing and a fireworks display were indulged in. The final ceremonies in connection with tiie marriage took place on Sunday, when the bride was conducted to her husband’s house by her father. The bride, heavily veiled, only remained for a short space of time, and will remain wilh her parents for two or three years before taking up her new home,' during which period she must not he seen by her husband. In his presence she must he veiled, and can only remove the veil when ho Is out of sight.
