TROTTING.

THE WAIKATO MEETING

FIELD IN THE MAIN EVENT.

REVIEW OF LATEST FORM. (By “Padlock.") While the field for the Waikato Handicap. the leading event on Hie programme of (lie Summer meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club, is confined to six acceptors, the class is Very useful. The two mile race should provide an attractive finish at Claudelands on Saturday, additional interest attaching to the contest by virtue of Hie fact that It will be a qualifying lest for some of the candidates with the Auckland Gup ahead. Brentlight (12yds) is a member of B. D. Kennerley’s Te .Awamutu stable with a very consistent list of performances during the racing lie lias had oil provincial tracks this season. Of the three seconds and throe third placings at two miles to the credit of the Matchlight gelding, two second placings were to Direct Morning, In the Mack Memorial at Claudelands and the Labour Day Handicap at Auckland. Direct Morning was an easy victor on the opening occasion, but there was only the narrowest of margins between the pair at their latest meeting. The field ahead is clear of this, opposition and Brentlight, although there are other difficult horses to dispose of, appears in a posilion to give a very favourable account of himself, both here and in the sprint race of the day. The Fellciing trained Brent Zolonk (24yds), who also claims the double engagement on Saturday, Is last remembered for a decisive success In the ten furlong race on the concluding clay of the Auckland Club’s meeting, The Brent Locanda gelding lias some very useful form at two miles as well and, although he is likely to make chief appeal in the sprint on Saturday, his prospects over the stayers’ trip will not require to be passed by lightly as W. Hughes’ charge is in excellent order. Dan Direct (24yds) was successful in the Waikato Handicap last season, and although his subsequent form has hardly boon up to expectations he is quite capable of providing another surprise, especially as lie is likely to have a fast track lo which the imported roan gelding Is partial. He is another who lias had ttic acceptance met for him in Hie Farewell Handicap, in which lallcr race tie is likely to find tho more. favour of his two engagements. Little Guy (24yds), who lias been on the winning list as a sprinter this season, is lo concentrate on the stayers’ journey on Saturday and the effort by Hie Hamilton owned and Auckland trained chestnut will occasion more than average interest. F. ,1. Smith lias the Beal Guy pacer In fine order and lie is expected to answer demands, viewed from the staying aspect. At Hastings, three seasons ago, Little Guy, in winning at two miles, recorded 4.37 or iOsecs better than handicapped. While better time figures are set the chestnut on Saturday he is doing so well that the Improvement essential is, probably, hot too much to expect. Te Wahia (24yds) also figures In the shorter race” and It Is quite on the cards that he will make Hie double appearance. Til is member of R. A. McMillan’s team ha? been away from the successful list for a lengthy period and although Hie task ahead ip not of the easy order, if a surprise was staged by the Tamaliere candidate it would be popularly received. First Flight (48yds) is the back marker in the two mile race, which is the only engagement set down for her on Hie coming programme. Her form to the present stage of tho season has not been marked, hut she has not. been favoured at all by the running on Hie two latest occasions. She displayed some attractive form last, season and is undoubtedly a class performer when at her best. There Is every prospect that First Flight will be” better Jn condition when she is paraded on Saturday then at any stage this season, in which case she will make it very interesting for the best of the opposition. Just at this stage Brentlight, Little Guy and First Flight are well discussed candidates engaged hi the race ahead.
