ORATORIO STOPPED.
i i DEAN AND PURGATORY THEME. ! | It was announced last month that j the Dean of Peterborough, Dr. J. G. ; Simpson, had objected to Elgar’s oratorio “The Dream of Geronlius” being performed in Peterborough Cathedral thy Hie Peterborough Choral Union and Orchestral Society. Dr. Simpson said: “I prefer not to discuss why l think ‘The Dream of Geronlius’ is not suitable for performance In a Church of England cathedral. Put briefly, it is because i the work is by a Homan Catholic and because the theme supports a doctrine which the Church of England denies, that of Hie existence of purgatory. “If the performance of ‘The Dream of Geronlius’ were allowed in an Anglican Gluireh it would be countenancing a doctrine which Hie Church of England condemns.” lie added that "The Dream of Geronlius” was quite suitable for a public hall but not l’or a cathedral. At. a committee meeting of the Choral and Orchestral Society it was decided to substitute another oratorio to be given in Hie cathedral next .May.
