NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE

NEED FOR NEW MARKET* ADDRESS BY MINISTER. OPPORTUNITY IN THE EAST*) (£y Telegraph.—Press Association.) \ STRATFORD, Thursday. ' In opening the Stratford Show tO-< day the Hon. R. Masters, Minister Of Industries and Commerce, while ex-» pressing satisfaction at the inorease la production, said the question of what to do with the produce merited serious! consideration. The farmers in Bri-< tain were probably having the most anxious time for many years and one could not but express sympathy with them in the unfortunate position ini which they found themselves. Relief had been given as a result of the Ottawa Conference, both protection and, quantitative restrictions on foreign produce. This had now been extend-* ed to include, for a period, Dominion meats. > In view of the tremendous Increase!! in the dairy produce going to Britain It was possible that a quantitative re-* striction might be demanded for for-* eign and Dominion supplies, continued the Minister. The increased produce tion of butter and cheese in New Zealand and Australia this year was ail going on the British market. Unless New Zealand, like Australia, attempt-* ed to find new markets the Dominion was going to be up against a difficult problem. Mr Goodfollow’s View Combated. Speaking fo the necessity for flndin© new markets in the East Mr Masters* combated Mr Goodfellow’s statementi made at a Taranaki meeting on Mon-j day that no adequate market wasavailable in the East as the teeming’ millions there were unable to buy. Mr Masters said it was true the teeming millions in the East were in the maiaj poverty stricken. "However, the fact remains that Eastern countries last year tools £1,000,000 worth of milk products, made up of cheese, butter powdered and condensed milk,’’ he continued. “Those responsible for marketing Nev<J Zealand produce should use the utmost endeavours to secure a share of that trade. As each year passes tha task is more difficult. The New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company is already sending butter, milk powder, and similar commodities to the East. “I say there is a market for butter, cheese, wool, meat, hides, skins and fruit. I want to impress upon tha New Zealand farmer not to be content to put his eggs in one basket, more especially when our principal market Is being over-supplied.’’
