WAIKATO RAGING CLUB

SPRING MEETING TO BE OPENED TO-MORROW THE CUP AND CAMBRIDGE HANDICAP LEADING EVENTS A REVIEW OF THE FIELDS ENGAGED AT TE RAPA. (By “Martian.”) The Spring Meeting of the Waikato Raolng Olu'b will be held at Te Rapa on Saturday and Monday, when large public support ts anticipated. The fields for the first day are good In numbers and quality, the presence of several candidates from southern stables promising to enhan.co the intorest In the racing. As the result of the continued good weather the course will be much faster than Is customarily met with at this period of the season. The leading events to-morrow will be the Waikato Cup Handicap (one mile and a-quarter) and the Cambridge Handicap (six furlongs). The first event will start at 12.15 p.m., and the field In the eighth race will be despatched at 5.30 p.m.

12.15. TRIAL STAKES Of £75 and £3 Sweepstake; 6 fur.

Thorp nre twenty-two in this field. Among I lie most promising is Good Pun. The To Arnha candidate was close up to the placed horses in two appearances at Avondale, his fourth there being achieved after losing a lot of ground at the start, lie was beaten by a goori sort when Carfex led him home in the mile Gordon Handicap at Elkrslie. BelUopper was in second place to Jonathan at Avondale and the latter's subsequent form has been good, Chang, who has worked well of late, will also make appeal. He came hack to the scene at Avondale after a long absence from racing and ran a good third in highwelght company. Chateau, Kanapa, Loombination. Arawa Rose, Transaction and Whirlalong have each shown some form, while Kalian, Merry Lap, Beryl Latour and Schizanthus are also possibilities. The best supported are likely to be Good Run, Chang and Belltopper. 1.0. WAIMAI HURDLES Of £<00; 1A miles.

Among the dozen in this field, High Commissioner has won two races and Prince of Orange won at his only start. The latter’s success, gained at Elierelie recently, was impressive. High Commissioner won at Oiftvi and Waverley. Arcade scored in useful company at Ellerslie in the Winter. Foxhound may not be speedy enough, but Welcome Boy can travel. This will he his first start in the division, but his schooling work is reported as being particularly good. Te Koroke i? a novice at jumping. Of the others Carl Hertz, Tapapa and Abbey Dream read best.. Final investment figures are likely to indicate Prinoo of Orange, High Commissioner and Arcade. 1 .45. HAUTAPt; HACK HANDICAP, Of i:\00; 7 fur. st. ih. st. lb.

There are many smart hacks engaged here. Glenvane, who hails from New Plymouth, has won four events in as many starts. Imamint, King’s Knave, W’oodfull and Puss Moth are each capable, with Imamint and Woodfull perhaps the more advanced by racing. Ruby Dawn, Holly Holm, King Win and Limex are local candidates of whom the latter appeals most. Gay Marigold and Lady Lulu will also have followings, while Hluminelli may do best of the others. The public may select Glenvane, Limex and Woodfull. 2.30. WAIKATO CUP, Of £225 (including gold cup valued at £25); 1| miles.

There are fourteen acceptors for the leading distance event, but one or two defections can he expected. After his" second in the Avondale Gup -f and his win in the Milchelson Cup. Royal Artist will make strong appeal. King’s Archer, who is also in the sprint has done well at shorter Journeys this season. lie is very forward. Refresher’s recent success in the AVavcrley Cup stamps him as a prospect also. Valroe would appeal most on an easy track as also applies to Grand Tea, True Blood and Cruachan. To Hola (Jellicoe Handicap), LimeOn (King Edward Memorial), and Bronze Tray (Avondale Cup), are winners this ■season and this division will claim strong support. Of Eager Rose, Master Brierly, and Knight of Australia, the latter may' ,do best. The. favourite will probably come from Royal Artist, Bronze Tray and Umeen. 5.15. CLAUD ELAN OS HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP.

Tlirro ia a strong flrlil of the giviili' *in ihi.> milt 1 pvont. ':hf .luv's p.-isl form entitles him In tin? post of Imn our, tout lie may not be quite at ms 1

best yet. The Baroscope—Princess Bede bracket will have a following as both are forward in condition. Soloist was running on when he beat all but Golden Wings in the open sprint on the concluding day at Ellerslie. Orby’s Choice and Ganpat are well conditioned southerners, while h,'Allegro is a local candidate with good claims. Trislina, Gay Idea, Glen Rata, Knight of Australia, Sub-Editor and Sammy, the latter a very promising sort, will also have support, but most consideration may be extended to Soloist, L’Allegro and the Baroscope— Prlnoess Bede brackei. 4.0. TAMAIIERE STAKES Of £100; 2-year-olds; 4 fur.

There are several In the juvenile contest who have yet to race. Star Artist (second at Avondale) and Gay Seton (third at Ellerslie) represent the best form. Pelagia, Bonny Gay, Enjoyment, Coronis, King Musk, King Mestor, Bonny Joyce and Gay Bose, have had racing and each are likely to show improvement. Of the newcomers Impasto (half brother to Royal Ruler) and Te Tawa (brother lo Te Kara), are well spoken of, especially the former, who may be good enough to win. Machine figures are likely io favour Star Artist, Gay Seton and Pelagia. 4.45. CAMBRIDGE HANDICAP, Of £150; G fur.

The sprint field is not large, but it should be a good race. Paganelli has not had a start since April and although lie is class, this may tell at the end. Of Volimond and King’s Archer (also in the Cup), the latter appeals most. Tea Trader and High Comedy are coupled, but only the former is likely to start and this speed merchant will be favourite. Marechal may not be ready, but Gold Day showed at Ellerslie that he was coming back to form. Imamint (who is also engaged earlier), Valuation and Jonathan are lightweight possibilities, of whom the latter will be well suited by the long straight. The majority of the investments may be for Tea Trader, Jonathan and Gold Day. 5.30. TAUPini HACK HANDICAP. Of £75; £3 sweepstake; 6 fur. st. lb. st. lb.

In the concluding event of the'Programme there are many promising hacks. Lord Aintree, Moonlleet, Lucidus, Pelting and Senorita are winners this season. The latter ran a fine fourth in the Great Northern Guineas. Sparkling Morn has good form of the past term. Mungatoon was successful in Australia a few months back and his presence will also add interest to a very open race. The favourite may come from Senorita, (Vloonfleet and Pelting. THE TOTALISATOR. TIMES OF CLOSING. FIVE STARTERS: TWO DIVIDENDS. In the event of the nurpbers allotted to the horses on the totalisator being five or more two dividends will be paid. At the Cambridge track yesterday morning Royal England and Chromadyne did a circuit with the pace on. At the finish Royal England had a shade the better of matters. '* • Douglas has the latter in good order. Abbey Dream went once on the plough working nicely. Book-law did a very useful workout. In the course of a circuit Booklaw had the speed on for seven furlongs and was hitting out freely. The track, without rain, may be too hard for him on Saturday. T. M. Morriss’ charges, Te Koroke and Tapapa, were worked separately. The previous morning the pair were sent over the fences and they both jumped well. Riding engagements for Te Rapa: \ Turner, Abbey Dream; C. Clune, Tapapa; G. Carmont, Maunga ICng.

HORSES FROM TARANAKI. REFRESHER GALLOPED A MILE. THE LATEST ARRIVALS. Refresher, Glenvane and Sparkling Morn, members of R. Barlow’s team with engagements at the Waikato meeting, arrived from New Plymouth by float late yesterday. They were on the tracks at Te Rapa this morning. These horses look well. Sparkling Morn and Glenvane were extended pace work this morning, while Refresher (A. McLeod) was galloped a mile on the plough in company With Royal Visitor (Brady). They covered the journey in 1.4 G. Refresher was doing his work nicely throughout and could have improved on the effort. McLeod, who Is apprenticed to Barlow, will ride the three horses from the stable in their engagements tomorrow. Soveral of the local candidates and Ganpat, from Wanganui, were out this morning. The latter is very fit. Pelting and Ruby Dawn were, separately, given fast work on the plough, both hitting out well. A. G. Parsons is to ride Pelting in the Taupiri Hark Handicap to-morrow'.
