SCHOOLBOOK CONTRACT.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Mr R. Masters, Minister of Education, spoke plainly to a deputation of school committee men who waited upon him In reference to tile schoolbook contract. After hearing Mr Masters’ explanation one can imagine that the members of the deputation felt sotTy for themselves that they had been forced Into such a position, as tho Minister conclusively showed to the satisfaction of all reasonable men that things were not as they had been represented—substantial savings had been effected, an ellloient contract concluded, and the Minister, far from being the sweet little innocent abroad he is so often depleted, had proved himself an astute business man who had faithfully conserved the interests of the country, the schools and the parents; whilst in the process he had checkmated interests which, ohagrined at developments, have so represented the position as to raise an immense hullabaloo on a very flimsy pretext. Possibly there are those who will refuse to be convinced, but the great majority of the/people of the Dominion will, I feel sure, concede that the villain in the pioce is not the Minister of Education. To locate him' it'will be necessary to take a peep behind the scenes, where he will probably be found stirring with a reglet a steaming cauldron of self-interest.—l am, etc., CONVINCED. Hamilton, November 16, 1932.
