THE WATERSIDE DISPUTE.
EMPLOYERS’ NEW OFER. BALLOT TAKEN BY M*SN. AUCKLAND, Thursday. A ballot of the members of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union was completed yesterday on new proposals regarding the wages and conditions of waterside workers, made by the shipping companies. These proposals arc considered to be better than those which were discussed by a conciliation council some months ago and rejected by the men throughout the Dominion. The old award expired on October 31 of last year, hut the men have continued to work under Its. conditions, although since August 18 they have been receiving the new scale of pay proposed at the conciliation clJuncll, having accepted this rate of Is lid an hour under protest. It is understood that if the new terms and conditions are accepted by the men the rate of pay proposed, 2s an hour, will he made retrospective to August 19. Ballots are to be taken at other ports during the next few days. The ballot papers are to be forwarded to Wellington, where the count will take place. It Is expected that the result will be known early next month.
