TOWN TO HONOUR BRIDE
DR. JOAN MACDONALD. PIPERS AND CARPET OF FLOWERS. This old market town is preparing almost stealthily for the wedding of the Prime Minister’s second daughter, Dr. Joan MacDonald, to Dr. Alistair Mackinnon in the Congregational Church here next Tuesday, writes a correspondent on September 7. I was told to-day that the local council had purposed to meet in state the bridal procession as it entered tile town from Chequers, a mile or two away; and Mr Ramsay MacDonald was to have been presented with an address of welcome. But he has declined this honour. He desires to be regarded as merely the father of the bride, and in that capacity to take second place. None Die less Wendovcr is determined to put its mark on the unique occasion. It visualises the whole of the Cabinet within its tranquil scene; and as in its past it lias received sonic of the greatest of England’s statesmen, so it will greet (lie Prime Minister and iiis colleagues with a flourish of flags if not of trumpets. Carpet of Flowers. The little town will he bannered and bunting-bright from end to end. Its children will gather along the wedding-way and cheer the bride and cast Powers before her. I hear, 100, that a band of pipers will march lo meet her and escort her with stirring music to the red-bricked church. Dr. MacDonald Is completing ilircewceks residence in Wendovcr to fulfil (tie law. People here now know her quite well, so often has she been seen in the town. Flic makes frequent visits lo Chequers, where many presents have, been delivered for her. Whlto and Gold Brldo. Special arrangements are, I hear, being made for the receipt of congratulatory telegrams.
