NOTES FROM MATAMATA.

The game between Waipa (challengers) and Matamata (holders), for the Peace Cup provided an even contest, in which the opponents were so evenly matched that practically no spectacular football was witnessed. The challengers forwards were slightly on top all the way through, and the local backs were a shade superior. Territorially Waipa held the upper hand for three-fifths, of the game, but they badly lacked an inside back with a good cut In and « many promising movements came to nothing.

Pollard, at full-back for Waipa, was very safe and his line kicking excellent. Lash, at centre, was fast off the mark, but a few wild passes spoilt his display and his place-kicking was off. Both Ell-loot and Spiers showed pace on the wings. Bell and Maclcy, at five-eighths, tackled well, but neither showed a decent cut in and their play wasi too orthodox. The half, Jackson, was the bright spot in the Waipa rearguard, and though running a little too much, gave a bright display, There were no loafers in a good pack, Grace Bros., Meredith and Turney being great workers.- Thompson, the Waikato man, was not so conspicuous as usual.

, I. Inman, at full-back, got through a busy afternoon for Matamata in great style. He ran right through ! the opposition on one occasion and a little backing up by the backs would ’ have resulted in a try. Jim Wilson never got a run all day, but this threequarter stopped a certain try when he took two men, one after the other 1 -in the corner. Stewart, at centre, did not fill place, though he ! had no chance to show his abilities on • attack. Swap was also starved. B. ■ Inman and Carroll got through a lot of defensive work, but good tackling stopped a good deal of their aggression. Solomon, behind the scrum, had a torrid time, the Waipa scrummOrs attending to him assiduously. Story was outstanding for his general play in the pack. Porterfield did great work on the line-out. Sharp and Ensor were also conspicuous for good work. The Next Fixture. Thames, the next challengers, are reputedly strong in the forwards and the local scrummers will have to show improvement to feed the backs. Matamata cannot always expect to bo so lucky as 'they were last Saturday. ROLLER MILLS SHIELD. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT. AUCKLAND, Thursday. The annual provincial primary | schools’ Rugby football tournament for the Roller Mills Shield was continued yesterday. Following were the results:-: Section A.—Auckland Central, 14,' Auckland South, 3. Bickerton (2), Alexander and Marshall scored tries for the winners, Marshall converting one. Trustcott scored a try for Auckland South. Thames Valley, 6, Waipa, 3. Gibbs scored a try for Thames Valley and Williams kicked a penalty. Dalzlel scored a try for the losers. Section B.—South Auckland, 9, Hamilton. 3. Regan and Martin scored tries for South Auckland and Caris kicked a penalty. Howard scored for the losers. RULES OF THE GAME. UNSATISFACTORY DECISION.
