ENGLISHMEN AT TAUPIRI. GAME WITH SOUTH AUCKLAND. VISITORS’ LEAD HALF-TIME. (Special to Times.) TAUPIRI, Thursday. The English touring League team met South Auckland at Onslow Park, Taupiri, this afternoon, in showery weather, before a good attendance. The teams were:— England. Fullback: Sullivan. Threequarters: Ellaby, Pollard, Atkinson, Woods. Halves: Davis, Adams. ■ ■ Forwards: Williams, Wright, Fender, White, Horton, Feetham. South Auckland. Fullback: G. Tittleton. Threequarters: W. Smith, W. Tittleton, E. Abbott. Five-eighths: A. Menzies, K. Peckham. Halfback: L. Knight. Front row: W. Hogan, R. Stephenson, H. Mason. Second row: P. Mcßurnie, J. Laird. Back row: T. Tims. The Play. Several heavy showers fell before the match, while there were several hail showers during the game. From the kick-off South Auckland moved into English territory, where they were awarded a free, G. Tittleton kicking a'great goal. After play had been in progress for ten mimites, Wright secured and crossed the line for England, Sullivan goaling. Soon afterwards' the ball passed through the visiting rearguard for Atkinson to score.- Sullivan failed with-the kick. South Auckland pressed, but could not press home their advantage. White intercepted a pass and. ran 25 yards to score under the posts. Sullivan goaled; making the soore:— t England"' ....... 13 South Auckland 2 Atkinson was the next scorer for England from a characteristic passing rush. Sullivan failed with the kick. South Auckland retaliated and Timms scored. G. Tittleton failed: — South Auckland 5 England ...... ... 16 The ball once more travelled through the English backs for Woods to go across, Sullivan converting. Just before half-time Atkinson- scored his third try for England, Sullivan again converting. .* Half-time came with the-score: — England ............ 26 South Auckland 5 WELCOME TO HAMILTON. AM INFORMAL GATHERING. A ■warm welcome to Hamilton was extended the English touring League team at an Informal gathering in the Hamilton Hotel last evening by Or. F. H. Clapham, who expressed, on behalf of the Mayor (Dr. F. D. Pinfold), regret at his unavoidable absence. Cr. Clapham wished the team a pleasant sojourn in New Zealand, and hoped they would carry away pleasant recollections of their brief stay in Hamilton. Mr G. F. Hutchins, the team’s manager, replied brielly on behalf of the team.
