THE CHATHAM CUP. PROVINCIAL FINAL DECIDED. WANDERERS DEFEAT Y.M.G.A. In a bright interesting game, full of interest, and very willing throughout, Hamilton Wanderers won the Auckland provincial final of the Chatham Cup Association foodball competition by defeating Auckland Y.M.C.A. at Seddon Park on Saturday afternoon. The game was witnessed by about a thousand spectators. Wanderers took the decision with the score of one goal to nil, tout the visitors had much the better of the play territorially and frequently had their opponents working hard. Wanderers will meet Wellington Marist in the North Island final of the competition at Seddon Park on August 20. The Chatham Cup is- the principal trophy for Association football in the Dominion, and Its possession is invariably contested with the utmost keenness. The oup was presented by the Chatham, which was the first flagship of the New Zealand Squadron. Clubs, in both North and South Island compete, and the final is played between the respective champions. The present holders are Tramurewa, Auckland, who have twice won the national tr.ophy, but were defeated this season by Y.M.C.A. The teams were: Auckland Y.M.C.A.—Cowie, Bentley, Ross, Chalmers, Christie, Thornes, Humphreys, Mowat, Bell, Hamilton, Kay. Wanderers. —Raven, Gardiner, King, Smith, Caldwell, Bullock, Black, Corkindale, Stewart, Cavaye, Shonau. The visitors won the toss, and Wanderers kicked off against the wind and sun. Y.M.C.A. were first to attack, the ball going out near the corner flag. 'Gardiner -conceded a corner, which Cavaye cleared, and Wanderers, led toy Corkindale, set up a promising attack, but Stewart lost control of the ball, and Gowle -cleared. Sohonau sustained injuries to his ankle at this stage and was carried from the field. Y.M.C.A. came back to % the attaok and another corner ensued on the left, B'laok clearing. A promising movement initiated by Humphreys looked dangerous, but -Gardiner Intercepted when Kay appeared certain to soore. Hands against Kay held up the visitors, but Ross returned Gardiner's free kick, and Y.M.C.A. -continued to hold the advantage. A further corner fell to the left wing. An exciting melee In the goal mouth saw Wanderers hard pressed, Raven effecting a brilliant save from Hamilton’s shot, the ball being put behind toy Bell. Y.M.C.A. were quicker and smarter on the ball than their opponents, and showed superior combination. Wanderers Are Unlucky. Wanderers, had the spectators on their toes when Cavaye took the ball down the -left wing ail'd centred to Black, who drove In a' splendid shot which grazed the -bar. Wanderers were troubled by the wind and could not get the ball under control, while the -loss of Scbonau also affected their play. Bullock was playing a sound game in the homo, half-line, and kept a close watch on Humphreys, who was always dangerous. During a keen tussle near the home goal Gardiner received a hard knock, but was able to resume after treatment. Raven was playing a sound game in goal, and repeatedly -extricated his side from danger. A spell of midfield play' ensued, neither -side gaining much advantage, but there was at all times -greater method in the tactics of the Y.M.C.A. team. The' visito-s came on to the attack again and were pressing strongly when half-time, came without -score. Stewart Opens Score. -On the resumption Stewart got the ball at his toes and went right through -the opposition alone, but his goal shot lacked power and Cowie saved without difficulty. The visitors brought play back to opposition territory, where Wanderers had a lucky escape when a shot from -Mowat struck the bar. 'From play near Wanderers' goal Corkindale broke away and travelled well down the field before, placing a clever pass to Black on the right wing—the latter’s centre found Stewart in position, the centre forward cleverly heading into the net well out of Gowle’s reach. Wanderers > 1 Y.M.C.A 0 -Heartened by their success Wanderers attacked -strongly, but the defence held, and after a brief tussle Y.M.C.A. cleared to the opposite end, where two corners In quick succession fell to the attackers, neither of which brought result. Play became very willing, and Chalmers and Stewart were -oautloned. Y.M.C.A. continued to hold the territorial advantage, but the Wanderers’ defence was strong. Play moved back to midfield. Wanderers Initiated a dangerous attack, led by Cavaye, who shot at goal. Cowlo caught Cavaye’s shot, and while in position was charged over the line by Corkindale. Fortunately for Y.M.C.A. Cowie -managed to prevent the ball from crossing the line. Raven In the Limelight. Prom the clearance the ball went straight to the Wanderers’ end, and Humphreys was- close with a shot which Just skimmed the post. Raven again demonstrated his ability by saving cleverly under the bar when hard pressed. Y.M.C.A. were good in midfield, but could not finish off their movements. Wanderers were playing with Improved form, but were still not equal to their opponents in the finer points of the game. Their resolute defence, however, kept the visitors out. Y.M.C.A. several times reached Wanderers’ goal, but their shooting was faulty. With only a few minutes to go play was very keen, and moved quickly up and down the field. Excitement ran high when Wanderers were awarded a free for bands just outside of the penalty area. The free kick was -charged down, and Mowat completed the clearance.
