MOTORISTS PAY PENALTY. INSPECTOR’S ROUND-UP. Quite a tidy sum was collected in fines at the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning as the result of prosecutions against motorists without licenses brought by Traffic Inspector P. Courtney. On June 28 last the trafflo inspector 'conducted his annual round-up at the Hamilton traffic bridge. On charges of driving motor-cars or riding motor-cycles without a license, the following were fined £1 xvith costs varying from 10s to 12s; F. H. Livingstone, Clifford George Dawson, R. W. Brown, F. L. Lovell, C. \V. Bolmer, 11. Manuel, James A. Brinkman, Claude Edwards, lan Stewart, A. Holden, V. G. M. Aulin, T. S. Winter, Edgar Claude Wallace and J. H. Burton. Leopold Hodgins, through his counsel, claimed that lie actually had his license in his possession when accosted by the traffic inspector.—“ As soon as tic saw me lie travelled up Bridge Street to the county office and got a license,” said Mr Courtney. “He admitted driving without a license.”—A fine of £1 with costs 12s was imposed. Counsel for William Ball said his client attempted to get a license in Auckland, but was told by the authorities there to apply at Te Awamutu. It was while on his way to Te Awamutu that he had been intercepted by the Hamilton inspector.—Defendant was fined 10/-, with costs. “ There are mitigating 'circumstances in this case, too. Your Worship," pleaded counsel for Henry Rolfe. He said defendant was on his way to the office to renew his license, when apprehended. His Worship: He will be fined 10s with costs. According to counsel Derrick CarrRollett found nobody at the offices of the Putaruru Town Board on two occasions when he applied to renew his license. He paid someone else 5s to get the license for him, but had not received it when stopped by the inspector.—Defendant was -convicted and ordered to pay the costs. Cyril Hedge, J. W. Shirley and a Chinese hawker named Joe Fon, charged with the same offence, were each fined 10s with costs.
