Tlie New Zealand hockey team yesterday defeated Queensland by four goals to one. The New Zealand team was as follows :—C. Moore. P. J. Spiers, T. A. Ewan, P. J. Joblin, R. Munro,. T. Clark, D. Reid, P. 11. Anthony, M. Bay. T T Turbitt, F. Wellbourne. In the first half the New Zealanders experienced difficulty in working up a combination, but they deiended soundly and kept the Queenslanders out well, the home team obtaining only one goal, secured by C. Cormie. The second half saw a great rally by the visitors, with Bay doing great work in attack. He soon worked his side into a strong attacking force, which allowed the Queenslanders few chances, and the visitors’ defence was always sound. Ewan, Bay and Turbitt were always to the fore in the attack and Moore was a safe goal. Ewan and Bay worked an opening and gave a chance to Reid, who equalised the scores. Even play followed with both sides revealing class hockey, but with the New Zealanders displaying more finished work. Good piay by Reid and Turbitt gave New Zealand the lead, the latter’s shot finding: the net. Then Spiers - and Reid heat the defence anci fed Turbitt, who put the boll handily for Bay to shoot in. : Immediately afterwards Reid baffled the opposition with a crowning goal, the New Zealanders winning by four goals to one. The game was a splendid exhibition throughout. Every player showed a keenness which resulted in several ■-brilliant moves. The visitors showed, although this was only the second game of the torn - , that they are really -. a formidable side. With more practice they will more than uphold the high reputation New Zealand hockey players enjoy in this country.
