Frost In Hamilton. —There were 4.6 degrees of frost (ground temperature) registered at the Ruakura State Farm this morning. Yesterday 2.6 degrees were recorded.

Refusal to Co-operate.^ —At the monthly meeting of the Waitomo County • Council the •Otorohanga and Kawliia County Councils and the Te Kuiti Borough Council notified their objection to co-operate in the proposal to employ a group traffic inspector on the main highway.

Land Board. —A movement Is on foot to establish a new Land Board for the King Country. Those advocating the new innovation submit that at present endless confusion and vexing delays are caused through the settlers being on the verge of three land districts —'Auckland, Taranaki, and Wellington.

Show Building Insurance. —The Wellington Show Association has taken out a consequential loss policy on the Show buildings, with the cover reduced from £9OOO to £7OOO, providing for a six months’ Indemnity, at a cost of £27 lis 3d per annum. The six months’ Indemnity means that the insurance would give the association six months after a fire in which get re-established.

Definition of Unemployment.—-“To define unemployment is difficult," said (he Rev. Raymond Dudley at the weekly luncheon of Hie Wanganui Rotary Club. "When that'subject is touched on it has to -be reckoned whether such cases as those on half-time and those in enforced idleness through strikes or industrial lock-outs should be included.” .Mr Dudley suggested that a definition of unemployment should he: "The enforced idleness of ablebodied men and women who were willing to work, but could not find work at a definite standard of wages."

Intoxioato-d at. Frankton. —Charged with being intoxicated at- Frankton on Saturday afternoon, Fredrick Edward Burnell (32) was convicted and fined £l, In the Hamilton Magistrate's Court this morning. His Honour’s Regret. —“l have rpt had to -deal with share-milldng cases before,” observed Ills Honour, Mr Justice Herdman, in the Supreme Court at Hamilton to-day. “I am sorry that this has been brought before you, sir,” replied counsel. “So am I,” added His Honour dryly. Discharge From Bankruptcy. An application for discharge from bankruptcy made by Sydney Claude Mackinder, labourer, Ngartiawahia, was granted by Mr Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court at Hamilton this morning. Man Missing from Steamer. —A resident of Waiheke, Mr George Boxall, disappeared from the Northern Company’s passenger steamer Omana when he was travelling to Auckland last evening. Mr Boxall was sitting in the cabin with his wife after the vessel left Ostend at 5.30 o’clock. About half an hour later he went on deck and when the Omana was approaching the Northern Wharf at seven o'clock he could not be found. After the vessel berthed 10 minutes later a thorough search was made by the captain and -crew, but without success. •Mr Boxall was 61 years of age. King and Conference. —The Mayors of 16 of the largest cities in Canada, representing one-third of the population of that Dominion, have enthusiastically endorsed a suggestion that the King be Invited to open or close the Empire Economic Conference at Ottawa. In a cablegram to the editor of a Christchurch newspaper the editor of the Montreal Herald told of the support for the -suggestion in Canada and asked for New Zealand opinion. Representative opinions obtained in Christchurch are mostly in accord with the proposal If suitable arrangements can be made. Stamp Duty Exemptions —Among exemptions -from the operation of stamp duty on Interest under the National Expenditure Adjustment Act gazetted last week were securities In which are invested moneys belonging to a number qf benevolent organisations, war fund institutions and superannuation funds. Details of these exemptions are as follows:—The District Nursing Guild of St. John, Wellington; the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Auckland; the Manurewa Children’s Home; the Nelson Sick and Wounded Soldiers and their Dependants’ Fund Society (Incorporated) ; the National War Funds Cbuncil; the New Zealand Co-operallve Dairy Company, Limited, Employees’ Superannuation Fund; the New Zealand Nurses’ Memorial Fund (Incorporatated) ; the Orphan Home Trust Board, Auckland; the Pension Fund of the National Bank of New Zealand, Limited; the Union Bank of Australia, Limited, Staff Superannuation Fund; the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Limited, Superannuation Association.
