Congress sped to the conclusion of its greatest peacetime task to-day —that of balancing the gaping Treasury deficit and to preserve the United States dollar from the attacks pictured by the President, Mr Hociyer. The billion dollar revenue bill was returned to the House again and directed to a conference between the two branches to get a final agreement on the legislation. The House acted unanimously, and did not instruct its representatives at the conference to stand by this or that provision of the original House bill. This will expedite action by the conference. The gigantic tax-raising measure is intended to provide 1.115,000,000 dollars in new funds for the Government. next year, and will do the job of putting the country on “ a pay as you go ’’ basis again.
