SAFETY AT SEA.
FIRES ON STEAMERS. PRECAUTIONS CONSIDERED. (Official wiriupss.) RUGBY, May 31. The recent disastrous Are on the French passenger liner Georges Philippar has raised afresh the question of the use of combustible materiaf in ship construction. The 1919 international convention for the safety of life at sea provides for the fitting of fire-resisting bulkheads, for the establishment Of fire control and alarm systems and for the carriage of firefighting appliances on passen>fr steamers. However, it does not provide that the materials used in ship construction and fitting of passenger be fire-resisting. At present the question of limiting the use of combustible material in the construction an dfltting bf passenger vessels is engaging the attention of tiie British Board of Trade in consultation with the .shipping industry. The President of the Board of Trade, Mr Walter Runciman, stated in the House of Commons to-day that when these investigations were completed the desirability of initiating international action would be considered.
