LACOSTE DEFEATS WOOD. MIXED DOUBLES DECIDED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. PARIS, May 31. Lacoste sensationally defeated Wood in the third round of the men’s singles, 6 —o, 6 —l, 6 —B, 7 5. In the final of the mixed doubles, Perry and Miss Nuthall defeated Wood and Mrs Wilts-Moody 6—4, 6—2. Mr Wallis Myers In the Dai-ly Telegraph regrets that -the final in the mixed fV - 'dcs could not be postponed. Wood undergone a 'great mental strain ... the earlier struggle against L-auoste ami was unable ‘to give his partner adequate support. The British visitors offered to _ play on Wednesday, but the committee, fearing rain, decided that -the match must be played to-day. Referring to the Lacoste-Wood struggle, Mr Myers says the American seemed mesmerised in the first two sets. He then recovered and showed the -strength of 'character that had made him such a fine match saver in America. LacOste’s game was steadier but more variable than formerly, when Wood forgot he was meeting Tivden’s conqueror he played better •tenni-s than has been shown in Europe since the Wimbledon tournament In 1931.
