SOUTH AUCKLAND PLAY. TAUPIRI DEFEAT HAMILTON. LOCAL JUNIORS SUCCESSFUL. (By "Verax.") Football competitions unde? the jurisdiction of South Auckland Ruglfy League were advanced a further stage on Saturday. At local headquarters, Hinemoa Park, a senior and a junior game were played. The junior curtain-raiser between Hamilton and Ngaruawahia, which resulted in a win for the former by six points to nil, provided an interesting contest. Both teams displayed good combination, the standard of play, on the whole, being high. The Hamilton backs were superior' to the visitors’ riparguard while the forwards have the makings of a good pack. The losers, although putting up a good exhibition, lacked finish. Conspicuous players in the Hamilton thirteen were Pansy, Royal, Mclnally, Merrick, S. ’Nolan, McDonald and A. Graham. Tauplri Superior. Play in the first half of the senior match between Hamilton and Taupiri, which the visitors won 'by 19 points to nil, was even and exciting but in the second spell the Hamilton rearguard went to pieces and Taupiri added a further 13 points. For the winners the youthful fullback Patterson, played a very safe game. The three-quarter line, Jones, Hill and G. Tittleton was sound on defence and always dangerous on attack. Smith and Farrell, at fiveeights, were clever. Farrell was the more, impressive "Of the two, his fast penetrating runs being very effective. Taupiri’s best back was Garry, the 'half. . He got the ball away smartly from the scrum and was the mainstay of the winners’ defence. The vanguard was hard wurking wittuJackaways, Tittleton and Belcher showing to advantage. The Home Side. Thomas, fullback for Hamilton performed creditably.' The three-quart-ers, J. Muir, J. Hynes and Mitchell despite very limited chances worked hard. Mitchell played his best game to date while his confreres in their first match of the season" created a good impression. The five-eighths Holland and Hynes were not playing up to their customary form and despite good work by Cameron at half the inside backs were the weak links of the defence. The Hamilton forward line, was off colour. J.' O'Halloran, playing his first game, ' was the best forward. Stubbings, the break-a-way, . would have had more success using his weight in thb ruck instead of adopting a back’s tactics.
