SLIPS AND QUIPS.

*Tis a sad reflection, but it is one that is forced on the listener at Christchurch City Council meetings, that the supply of wit is running low (says Christchurch Sun). Councillors', it seems, have lost most of their verve, and repartee has been erased from the estimates. There were just a few bright lines in the civic patter at the last meeting. * # * * •Cr. Elizabeth R. McCombs: I don’t think a tennis club should be asked to fence a city council reserve. Cr. A. A. McLachlan (without any excuse at all) : No offence meant. Cr. T. H. Butterfield (discussing the area of the Rhodes Street reserve): There is only room for one tennis court, and the only other use for the piace is to play marbles Cr. M. E. Lyons (brightly): Have you got a couple of alleys and a tor? Cr. Butterfield (evidently making the position clear) : The Reserves Committee will do all wc can for those people if wc can. Cr. Elizabeth R. McCombs (wife of Cr. J. McCombs, M.P., chairman of the Finance Committee) : In the palmy days of this council, when we did have some money to spend Cr. Lyons: You did not have such a hard chairman of the Finance Committee then. Cr. Butterfield (on temporary police) : I was asked to come out and protect property, but the only thing that I objected to was that 1 didn’t like the hats. Cr. Baker (on the enrolling of temporary poiice under 21): They cannot legally do that. Cr. J. McCombs, M.P. (airily) : That would not worry the Government.
