SHOOTING SEASON.
OPENED TO-DAY. n EIRDS REPORTED PLENTIFUL. CONDITIONS FAVOURABLE. Conditions were favourable for the opening of the shooting season to-d>iy, and the prospects point to good being secured by the large numbers of sportsmen who are out. Many local enthusiasts left in the early hours for the swamps around Mercer, Rangiriri, and other favoured haunts' of the ducks, and as the birds are reported to be plentiful after .he recent rains they should not return empty-handed. There are a number of popular duck-shooting areas in trie South Auckland district, and many shooters from Auckland and other centres annually travel to this quarter for. their sport. It is well known that duck shooting is at its best on the opening day of the season, as the birds leave the feeding grounds and fly to the sanctuaries and harbours after the first few hours of shooting. This has become increasingly noticeable during the past* few seasons. Quail are said to be particularly numerous throughout the Auckland Acclimatisation Society's district, notably around Matamata and Putaruru and in southern areas. Pheasants are also more plentiful, due doubtless to the campaign of the society against stoats, weasels, and other ground vermin.
