UNEMPLOYMENT.

“STAND-DOWN” WEEK. CONCERN IN AUCKLAND. REPLY BY MINISTER. WELLINGTON, Sunday. The concern being expressed in Auckland at the fact that the standdown week on unemployment relief works had not yet been abolished was reported to the Minister in Charge of Unemployment, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, this afternoon. “ The Government desires to change over at the earliest possible moment to the new scheme whereby the standdown week will be abolished,” said Mr Coates. “ Instructions for the changeover were issued a week ago yesterday. I was Informed that in the case of Auckland about a fortnight would be required to make the change. In the meantime it was arranged that the old organisation should continue and the Hospital Board was asked to carry on as In the past until the new organisation was functioning. “ Whether arrangements for the change-over in Auckland have yet been completed I do not know, but I am inclined to think that the authorities there are* almost ready to make the change. I know that the Government wants the new scheme to operate at the earliest possible date. In the meantime if work cannot be found wo will see that mothers and children get an allotment to assist them until the full scheme is operating.’’ UNEMPLOYED WOMEN. ______ f CO-ORDINATING RELIEF MEASURES BOARD SETS UP COMMITTEE.
