BRITAIN’S TRADE OUTLOOK
CONFLICTING REPORTS. POSITION UNDER REVIEW: BURDEN OF, TAXATION. United Press Assn.—Eloc. Tel. Copyright. (Received May'2, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. A writer in the Economists’ Trade Review.finds that reports of the state of the Home trade are once again conflicting and says:— “in many respects there is'evidence of a deilini'te Improvement. Most of the tangible indications unite in suggesting that trade is definitely more active, and up to a point this is confirmed by reports from separate industries. Yet it is difficult to find any agreement that there has been a genuine improvement, and in some' respec! s the outlook has become a trill© worse. “The appreciation of sterling last month, coincident with 'the further depression of gold prices, caused the wholesale prices in many markets to fall heavily. “There is also disappointment that the Budget showed no prospect of an early lightening of the burden of taxation, many industrialists holding that no revival of business is possible while taxation remains at its present grievous level.”
