WAIKATO WINTER SHOW.

FINE EXHIBITION PROMISED.

NEW FEATURES INTRODUCED. There is perhaps no institution which can claim closer identification with the growth of Hamilton as a business and dairying centre than the Waikato Winter Show, and 26 years of progress will he represented in the big exhibition which opens on May 31. From a small beginning the show has grown to an event off national importance, and it is fitting that despite economic conditions, which are at the least depressing, this year’s festival promises to he a greater achievement than any previous'show. The interest of town and country has been considered in the preparation of the programme, and encouraging support has been forthcoming from many sources. Entries in the scheduled classes arc pouring in, while the claim of the Winter Show Association that the dairy section Is the world's largest display is supported by the record entries received. This year the total is 1,101, compared with 991 for 1931. This year’s figures eclipse the entries in the London Show last year, when 1016 dairy exhibits were displayed, and praotioally amount to Hamilton having as many dairy entries as all .the other New Zealand shows, put together. , New Features. The enterprise of the association is reflected in the many new features which have been Introduced this year. A remarkable robot, or mechanical man, known as “ Jason,” will perform the opening ceremony, an innovation which is sure to create widespread interest.

Another big feature will be the Women’s Institute courts. It is anticipated that about twenty institutes, representing practically the whole, of the district covered by the federation, will compete. The -interest of the show will by this means be carried much closer to the ihdme than in the past. A speoial class has been inaugurated for garden produce grown by unemployed under the Welfare scheme, while the keen interest that is being shown in the roots section is evidenced in the excellent entries received.

Of special importance to the dairying industry will be the exhibit arranged by the Alassey College authorities. Certain factors affecting the quality of New Zealand cheese will be demonstrated by photographs, while a display embracing phases of the grading of milk will also be set up. The Waikato Pig Recording Club will give demonstrations showing the best method of feeding pigs, .and a model pig enclosure, complete with miniature feeding troughs, “creeps," and other details, will be featured. The Technical High School will again be represented with a special exhibit of the-work done in the various departments. Competition promises to be very keen In the bakers’ bread section, for which entries are coming in from all parts of New Zealand. Entertainment of Patron*. Nothing has been left undone in the arrangements for the entertainment of patrons. An orchestra will be in attendance every, afternoon and evening, while the Winter Show Choir is to appear at- the opening ceremony and ,during the five days of the show. In addition to these musical features, a Japanese juggler and lightning sketch artist will f entertain eaoh afternoon and evening. A large number of sideshows and other attractions will be in attendance in the entertainment section., A number of workmen commenced operations this morning preparing the buildings for the stall-holders, who will he busily engaged in setting upt their exhibits within the next few days.
