MEETING OF THE COUNCIL MR MARTIN’S SERVICES. APPRECIATION EXPRESSED. 'rtie January meeting’ of the Raglan County Council, held at Ngaruawahi.i yesterday was attended by Crs 11. W. Wilson (chairman), H. Johnstone, M. J. Corcoran, J. E. Richardson, W. Vernon, J. L. V. Martin, T. Parker, J. H. Furniss, W. A. 11. Murray, A. Cobourne, K. Wright (engineer), and 11. Marsland (clerk). Valued Work for District. Mr W. Lee Marlin, former M.P. for Raglan, wrote expressing to the chairman and members his deep apprecia- j tlon of the help and assistance they had given him at all times and especially the valuable aid rendered by the i engineer (Mr Wright) and the clerk • (Mr Marsland). ■ < “During the four- years as member for your district I have not spared myself hut at all times have endeavoured to render faithful service, particularly regarding, the. roads and it is some satisfaction to know that in many cases the lot of the back block settlers has been considerably improved. lam sorry oui* relationship ; has been altered, but perhaps on some ; future occasion I may be permit led , to take the work up again. \ln the ; meantime I wish to place on record ! my appreciation of the help given and to assure, you all that my .experience with your council has been one of the happiest in my whole lifetime," added Mr . Marlin.

Cr Parker, in moving that the council place on record its recognition of Mr Lee Martin’s valued services and unflagging / energies in the. interests of the County, paid a high tribute to his endeavours. Cr Furniss seconded the motion, and speaking as a riding member, added his tribute to Mr Lpe Martin’s outstanding services. The chairman supported the remarks and characterised Mr Lee Martin as an excellent member, the motion being carried unanimously. Hospital Borrowing. The council gave its support to a proposal by the Waikato Hospital Board to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction to borrow by way of overdraft from the Bank of New Zealand £12,000 for the purpose of redeeming the debentures in connection with the Building Loan 1930, repayment to be made by annual Instalments of £3OOO by way of levy and, subsidy during the financial years 1933-4, 34-5, 35-6 and 36-7-. The effect of the proposal will be that Instead of the Board, having to repay £IO,OOO during the next financial year, £3OOO only will be required, he., £ISOO by levy on the local contributing authorities and .£ISOO subsidy. .’ General Matters. *-A dephtatfbn‘‘''orw'hingape settlers waited on the council and asked that | atteptlon- be given to certain roads in’ theif’Jdistrict. ’ The council authorised the riding member (Cr Murray) and the engineer to further investigate the request. When -the-deputation was present Cr Furniss stressed the point for actloh do be taken by the Counties’ Association to move in the direction of making the users of the road pay. The diversion of money to roads in competition with the railways was impoverishing requests such as those now before the council. The Public Works Department advised that £3765 4s 10d had been placed to the council’s credit of .the Main Highways revenue fund. The council resolved to make a donation equal to .the amount of rates to the Hamilton ;CommiihiiyACamp Association'in respect of 'Camp Fergusson at Okcle. Glen • Afton Colliers’ Limited was granted a lease of mining rights under a road in the Pukemiro riding, subject to the surface of the road concerned being fully protected.

Roads and Bridges.

In v hls report the engineer stated that in the Pukemlro Riding the Rot,o-

waro-Pukemiro Junction Road has been widened and some 1621 c.yds of » 2Jln crushed metal carted and spread. Proposals had been submitted and approved for the formation and metalling of the McDonald Mine Road and the formation had been completed and some 1000 c.yds of 2Jin crushed metal delivered and spread. On the Rotowaro-Huntly Road some 120 c.yds of metal chips have been delivered and spread towards patching purposes. Timber has been delivered and repairs effected to two bridges on the Glen Afton-Rotowaro Road and also to two bridges on the RanglrirT West Road..In the Walngaro Riding the work of metalling the worst portions of the Ruaklwi Hill had for the greater part been completed. In the Pirongia Riding the formation of Gray’s Road Is for the greater part completed and part of the timber delivered for the building of Gray’s Road bridge. In the Kariol Riding a contract had been let for the carting of some 2176 c.yds of metal chipn to the RuapukcTe Mata Road and the work commenced. In the Matakowhai Riding the a metalling done by relief workers on the Te Maarl Road, has been partly rolled. A start with the construction of the Tuakau Bridge had been made and -most of the plant had been delivered to the site, part of the staging erected and a start made with the earthwork to the approaches.
