MEAT EXPORTING FIRM. UNPROFITABLE BUSINESS. 2000 EMPLOYEES THROWN IDLE„ United Press Assn. — Elec. Tel. Copyright, (Received Jan. 2, 9.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 2. Mr \V. Angliss, the head of a large meat exporting firm, announces that owing to the low prices overseas his firm is unable to profitably carry on the export trade and its operations will ceaso for the time being. Two thousand men in Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland will be rendered idle. He pointed out that the London prices for mutton are only half those ruling locally, while beef prices are 25 per cent, lower. The only hope for the future was the adoption of reciprocal preference arising out of the forthcoming Ottawa Conference. He pinned his faith to this conference. During 1938-29, Australia exported over 189,000,000 carcases of frozen beef valued at £2,750,000 and nearly 85,000,000 carcases of frozen mutton and lamb valued at £2,165,000.
