MIRACULOUS ESCAPE.
CAR PLUNGES .50 FEET. WIRE FENCE TORN AWAY. ACCIDENT ON RAGLAN ROAD. A miraculous escape from serious injury, if not death, was a feature of a sensational motor accident on the Raglan road, about four miles on the western side of Whatawhata, at about 5.30 last night. Mr C. B. Tasker, postmaster of the Frankton Railway oftlce, was returning from Raglan with his wife, daughter, and three sons, in a five-passenger touring car, and was turning a corner when a sudden skid caused the car to leave the road. Tearing through a high gorse hedge, the vehicle careered down a steep incline carrying away part of a wire fence in its progress. Fifty feet- below, out of sight of tiie road, it came to rest parallel with the road. But for Hie fact that a mass of wire was tangled in the undergear, holding it upright, the car would certainly have capsized, but as it was the four wheels remained on the ground. The driver and passengers all suffered from shock, and Mrs Tasker had her hand cut by flying glass. The car was not seriously damaged, a buckled radiator, lamps and mudguards and broken hood being the principal items. Mr Ernest Tisch, of Hamilton, was the first motorist to arrive on tiie scene, and he took Mrs Tasker and Miss Gabrielle Tasker to their home. Other motorists also stopped, and with their' assistance Mr Tasker’s car was hauled back on to tiie road. It was driven to Frankton under its own power. Accidents have occurred previously at this spot, which, although not regarded as dangerous, must be negotiated with care. Mr Tasker and his family were fortunate in escaping so lightly, for had their car left the road sideways instead of front first, nothing could have stopped it from rolling over and over down the bank.
