LEADINQ ENGLISH RIDER. It was recently printed In English papers that the crack Jockey, Gordon Richards, was out to make £IOO,OOO and then retire. That might not be very difficult for him either, as successful trainers and Jookeys often get hints concerning good business Investments. They (Jo not all prove gilt-edged, but a fair proportion do. Richards denies that he has any Idea of giving up riding, no matter what money he makes. He Intonds to keop going a 3 long as he oan. Questioned as to his ambitions, Richards replied: “My great ambition. *1 don't think I have one.” When It was put to him he might like to win a Derby, his answer was, “Well, yos, perhaps; but that Is the aim of every Jockey. . Isn't It?” On It being mentioned that he wa3 c edited with making £16,000 a year, Richards bocame somowhat hected, and remarked: “That Is a rldloulous bit of guesswork. It’s nothing llko that figure.” Richards Is a family man, and Is very proud of his two sons, of whom, In due course, he hopes to make jockeys. If ho carries out that Intention he may have one or the other—perhaps both —riding against him before ho Is 40.
