PALMERSTON’S PROGRESS.
MAYOR REVIEWS THE PAST YEAR. “The year has been an exceptionally trying one owing to the economlo depression overshadowing the whole world,” states the Mayor, Mr A. E. Mansford, In a review of Palmerston North’s progress during the year. “While the present Is not a time for pessimism, we must not fail to apprecialo tho times through which we aro passing. Just how long we must wait for the return to normal conditions it' Is hard to say, hut it is certain that wo 'can only gain this position by steady and determined self-denial. “It Is definitely postponed and made harder of attainment hv waste and luxury, both private and public. If wo from private, municipal, and general government points of vlow, direct our fuluro policies to caution and to seeing that we get value for money expended, it will he found Ibis Is the way we can each best help our Dominion, tho Empire, and ourselves.” Mr Mansford, in speaking of unemployment, said: “The council has done its best to grapple with this stupendous problem, and to afford relief a largo number of men have been placed in employment on city works. Tho council has expended, with tho present unemployment loan, the sum of £OOOO In employment of men on relief works.”
