ILS. (Hamilton). —The Boer War lasted from October 11, 1899, until May 31, 1902, when peace was signed at Pretoria. At first the British met with some serious reverses, but following the relief of Kimberley the surrender of Cronje, the relief of Ladysmith and Mafeking which followed In quick succession alter the arrival of Lord Roberts as Com-mander-In-Chief, with Lork Kitchener as Chief-of-Staff in February, 1900 the struggle was practically over, though the suppression of guerilla warfare kept the British active for a considerable period subsequently until the signing of the peace.—Ed.
