POOR CORN PRICES.
ENGLISH FARMERS’ TROUBLES. MISTRUST OF GOVERNMENT. Mr George Robinson, of Chelmsford. Essex, arrived in Wellington by the Tainui from Southampton. Mr Robinson has a mixed farm about 25 miles from London and confessed yesterday that he had heard so much i about New Zealand that he decided j to come out with his wife and have a look at the country. He intends to see as much of it as possible before returning by the same ship from Auckland. The wheat and corn trade in England was very bad, he said, although there had been some improvement .* been down to 2is a quarter, and the ; best winter oats down to 16s a quar- ’ ter. There was no doubt, he said. I that Russian wheat, which had been ! dumped in at 12s to 1 is. had plajcd 1 the devil” w.th English farmers. . They could not produce wheat at that ; price and had had it more or less on their hands .although a lot of them I had been glad to get rid of it to pay i overhead expenses. In the last few ; weeks, however, there had been a . general improvement, wheat rising to | 2is and oats making up to 18s and £l. There was no Government help for ; farmers in England when the price of | their produce went down. Mr Robin- ■ son said, il’b »uuh there had been an oeitation for xears for some sort of ' farm relief. When the Government subsidised the susv beet crop it had : been a great help in Essex and the North of Fncland to those who went ,n for sugar be”! production The corn situation, however, had b”en so bad that quit*' a number of arable I farmers hid laid down their land in grass for cattle Mr Robinson is an arable farmer, with some cattle, an I his milk is called for twice a day an i taken to London. He does not concentrate on butterfat production. —j : 2- ' ■
