WHITIORA SCHOOL.

FANCY DRESS BALL. On the occasion of the annual school Fancy Dress Ball held on Friday last, August 7, the Whitora Infant School was thronged with a gay crowd of pupils and friends in festive attire.

The decoration of the rooms was left in the hands of Mr G. Henderson, assisted by local residents, to whom great credit is due for the very pleasing results.

The teaching staff had charge of the floor arrangements and carried out their duties under the crowded conditions in a very satisfactory manner. A feature of the evening was the folk dancing and choruses presented by the- school pupils, the music being supplied by an electrical gramophone kindly lent by Mr C. W. Wycherley. Airs H. C. Ross, who so capably acted as judge at the last annual ball, tilled the position again this year, and expressed surprise and pleasure at the Ingenuity and variety of the costumes.

She was assisted by Mrs N. Ross, and the following list of prize-winners is a tribute to the impartiality of their choice, for these costumes were generally declaerd to be of outstanding merit.

Best costume, child under 6 years.— Girl: Shirley Trenery, Victorian Lady; Boy: Edmond Morrow, Black Cat. Sixseven years: Ada Cairns, Gipsy; Keith Fox, Micky Mouse. Eight and nine years: Joyce Snowling, Fairy; David Tudhope, Barrister. Ten and eleven years: Hilda White, Militaire; Sam Johnston, Cowboy. Twelve years and over: Elsie Cook, Pierette; Derek Bullock, Sir Walter Raleigh. Most original: Joan Cheeseman, Lily; Pat McDevitt, Ten Per Cent. Cut. Best Pair: Mona and Kathleen Nicholson, Hula Girls. Poster: Louise Riddell, Pole’s Arcade.

Supper was served to the young people by the ladies’ committee and judging by the hearty way In which it was partaken of, it proved a very popular part of the evening's enjoyment. After supper had been served dancing was carried on until midnight by the adults.

For several years it has been customary to hold the ball in the Frankton Town Hall, but this year the school committee on account of the present stringent times decided to hold It in the school buildings and thereby makty the cost of admission much lower. Judging by the crowds who attended the function on Friday night, this Is a popular innovation, and although the accommodation at the school was severely taxed it is doubtful whether the same number would have gone to Frankton Junction, and paid the higher cost of admission which would of necessity have been imposed.

Unfortunately, owing to the lateness of the hour, the prizes could not be presented on Friday night, the chairman of the 'school committee presenting them on Monday morning. The committee desire to thank all those to whose assistance the outstanding success of the function is largely due.
