IN HIGH REPUTE.
N.Z. BUTTER IN HOMELAND. * “There's no doubt about it—New Zealand butter has got a very high name in England," said Mr G. F. Youngs, a businessman who returned to New Zealand by the Tainui after four years’ absence. “Everybody In England seems to buy New Zealand butter from preference, and I'll guarantee you’ll find it In 85 per cent of the homes you visit. Now it is even more in demand because times are hard and it is cheaper than English butter. What butter they are getting In from Russia is very cheap and unquestionably inferior to New Zealand butter." “I’d like to say something cheerful about business, but one has got to face the facts," he continued. “Trade generally is pretty bad in most businesses, and they have all been severely hit, but in what I call the cash trade they are having a better time than anyone else. This is in the low-priced popular stuff, and business is better because in times of depression the public naturally goes in for cheaper articles. The bulk of these goods which are sold at low prices are produced in England, although some come from Germany and elsewhere. “As far as one can judge, the general opinion in England is that things will not improve very much until the country gets a change of Government," Mr Youngs said. “People have got the money, but they have not the confidence to place it in the hands of the Labour Party. Of course the market is still falling, and while that is going on things are bound to be quiet."
