COMPETITION FOR BEEF KEEN. VALUES REPORTED FIRMER. (By Telegraph—Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. Messrs A. Buckland and Son report:—At Westfield to-day the fat cattle supply numbered 223 head (170 steers and 53 cows and heifers), compared with 130 head last Wednesday. The quality of the ox heef showed a decided improvement. Competition was keener and values firmer. Extra choice ox sold to 25s per 1001 b; choice and prime, 23s to 245; secondary and plain, 20s to 225; prime young cow and heifer beef, 23s to 255; secondary, 17s Gd to 225. Extra heavy prime steers ranged In price from £ll 2s Gd to £ll 15s; heavy, £lO to £11; lighter, £7 15s to £9 17s Gd; light, £6 10s to £7 12s Gd; small and unfinished steers £3 JOs to £G 7s Gd; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £7 10s to £8 15s; heavy, £6 to £7 ss; lighter, £4 15s to £5 17s Gd; others, £2 10s to £4 12s Gd. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, Auckland, report at their weekly Westfield fat stock market held to-day ox beef was yarded in larger numbers than last week and sold under a good demand at improved rates. Cow and heifer beef came forward in lesser numbers than usual and sold keenly at advanced rates.
