THE WHEAT DUTIES.

ATTITUDE OF LABOUR.

NOT YET DETERMINED. THOROUGH INVESTIGATION. The attitude of the Labour Party towards the wheat duties was touched -on by Mr \V. Nash, Labour M.P. for Hutt, addressing a large gathering of Hamilton electors at Liberty Hall, Rosstrevor Street, last evening.

Mr Nash explained that the last .conference of Ills party had set up a committee of members familiar with fanning and industrial conditions to investigate ttic growth, production and distribution of wheat and also the costs of production and to bring down a report to the national executive? He was not suggesting that the price of wheat or of bread was right but he was claiming that the wheat grower should receive as much consideration as any other member of the community. The only way for a party whose working basis was equity and Justice to deal with the matter was to find out how the wheat-growers were af•feotod tJb'y the tariff (policy of the country. Having found out what the costs of production of wheat xvere, a price should be fixed suitable for the wheat growers and -the consumers. “When we know the facts we will leil the people of the Dominion our policy regarding wheat, flour and bread,” added 'Mr Nash. “In the meanwhile we will mcLe out what is fair and just to the wheat farmer in the same way as we do to those whe consume Hie product of iiis commodity.” (Applause).
