LATE NELLIE STEWART.
SIMPLE FUNERAL SERVICE. ,3554 USHERS WEAR WHITE. To harmonise with Miss Nellie Stewart-’s wish that there should he no mourning, the church ushers and the drivers of the hearse and mourning coaches wore white instead of black coats when the ashes of the famous actress were placed in the family vault in Boroondara Cemetery. At the service in St. Peter’s Church, Eastern Hill, the ashes, enclosed in a white casket, rested on a white cushion, covered with portion of the bejewelled court dress worn by Miss Stewart in “Sweet Nell of Old Drury.” Attached to the casket was a small silver plaque bearing the simple inscription: “Nellie Stewart, ‘Sweet Nell,’ June 2i, 1931." Thousands lined the route, standing bareheaded in the rain.
