THE WAIKATO CLUB. A WINTER FIXTURE. TE RAPA SATURDAY AND MONDAY. HANDICAPS FOR THE FIRST DAY. The Waikato Racing Club will hold a winter meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday and Monday'. This is a special permit for the present season, at which hurdle and steeplechase events will figure prominently on the programme. Time, 2.49. ~ > EXTRAORDINARY MISTAKE WRONG HORSE DESTROYED. CAMBRIDGE OWNER’S LOSS. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Mr Mervyn Wells, of Cambridge, has suffered severe loss through an extraordinary mistake that occurred. His horse Glen Maree started In the Hunt Club Hurdles on the first day of the Auckland meeting,;- - running fourth, and on Saturday In the Hunt Club Cup, in .which, he broke down. Mr Wells, after obtaining veterinary advice, .. decided to have the horse destroyed. Accordingly, before going to the races yesterday he gave instructions for Glen Maree to he shot and taken away. After running second in the Orakei Hurdles, the second race of the day. Loving .Cup, also owned by Mr Wells, was taken hack to his stables' and rejoined Glen Maree and one or two other horses that were running out in the paddocks. After painting with iodine some abrasions which Loving Gup had received, Mr Wells’ son left him and went back to the racecourse. It was not until after the races that the discovery was made that instead of Glen Maree being shot and taken away Loving Cup had been taken. The misfortune is a severe one for Mr Wells, for since last Christmas Loving Cup had won £590 in stakes, and the 5-year-old 1 Quin Abbey—Shell Shock gelding wa» showing marked promise.

BETTING RETURNS. DECREABE FOR BEABON. The totalisator receipts at racing and trotting meetings in the Auckland Province for t-he .season drawing to.a close show a decline of slightly over 19 per cent. There is a total decreaso in the betting to date of £428,917. compared with the full 1929-30 season. but the Auckland Trotting Club’s winter meeting has yet to be held, and should reduce this decrease by at least £50,000. ’ The total sum invested to date at meetings throughout the province is £1,809,420 10s, compared with £2,238,337 10s during the whole of the 1929-30 season. Compared with the 1928-29 season the investments show a decrease of £517,465, and with the season previous to that a decreaso of £922,045 10s. A Comparison.
