FIRST AID.
CLEAN HANDS. Wounds of the hands while at work owe their dangers to the fact that -the hands are never clean in the surgical sense. Soap and water only remove the cross dirt—the dirt that you can see. But hidden away In the folds of the skin are millions of minute organisms which can only be seen by the aid cl the miscroscope. To make the skin surgically clean or aseptic, you have to apply an antiseptic. That is why we paint a wound with iodine. It has the property of killing germs which are carried into the wound by whatever caused it. Hot boracic fomentations do a little more. In addition to being antiseptic the lint contains boracic acid—the heat brings an increased amount of blood to the part and therefore more white blood corpuscles to deal with the germs.
