ENGLAND SHAKEN.
SEVERE EARTHQUAKE. STRONGEST FOR 23 YEARS. PEOPLE ALARMED. United Press As3n.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, June 7. An earth tremor was felt throughout England at 1.30 a.m. to-day. No serious damage was done, but some sleepers in upper floors in the provinces were thrown from their beds, and crockery was broken. The alarmed people, especially villagers, rushed Into the streets hi their night clothes. The shock,_ apparently, was most severe in Yorkshire. It is believed to have been the strongest shock experienced in England for 23 years. The motion was felt clearly for a minute, and lasted altogether for seven minutes.
LATER. DAMAGE AT HULL. TWO HOUSES COLLAPSE. FELT ALSO IN EUROPE. Untied Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. CoDyrisrht. (Received June 8, 9.20 a.m.) LONDON, June 7. The city of Hull was shaken. Two houses collapsed and many chimneys fell down. At Manchester the police and fire brigade headquarters shook violently. London also felt the tremor, which however, was generally insufficient to awaken the great majority of the sleepers. There was no damage beyond a burst water main. Anxiety felt for the safety of St. Paul’s was dispelled on examination, which revealed not a trace of damage. Thunder and rain with curious sky colouring preceded the tremor in many parts of England. The shock was also felt in France, Belgium and Southern Norway, but no damage was done.

At Northallerton (Yorkshire) buildings were shaken to their foundations. Miss Christobel Pankhurst and sundry clergymen declare that the earthquake portends the second coming of (he Redeemer. The sea at the end of the Southend Pier, which is a mile and a half long, heaved as if driven by a gale. A heavy swell was reported seventy miles off Scarborough following the disturbance, which resembled that caused by I’-c explosion of depth bombs. It caused a steamer to list.
