SOMERSET OUT FOR 244

DOMINION CRICKETERS. LEADING BOWLERS OMITTED. FIELDSMEN’S WORK IMPROVED. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, June 6. The New Zealand cricketers commenced their match against Somerset to-day. Lowry lost the toss, and Somerset batted on an easy wicket. The weather was fine and the attendance numbered 4000. Merritt, Cromb and Matheson were omitted from the touring team. Cromb and Matheson are receiving treatment for slight muscle strains. The teams were as follows: New Zealand.—Lowry, Blunt, Alcott, Page, Weir, Talbot, James, Vivian, Kerr, Dempster, Mills. Somerset.—Young, Lee, Macßryan, Ingle, White, Case, Earle, Wellard, Marshall, Burrough, Pratten. New Zealand was handicapped by the absence of its three leading bowlers. Lowry handled the attack with excellent judgment. Somerset was dismissed for 244. A bright partnership by Lee and Ingle added 87 for- the third wicket. Ingle played particularly attractive cricket. The remaining batsmen offered little opposition. Lee became too cautious approaching the century, being caught at third slip. Weir bowled with admirable steadiness throughout, sending down 27 overs J 0 of which were maidens. Blunt also kept a good length and tempted the batsmen to make mistakes. In his 2G over seven were maidens.

New Zealand batted for 85 minutes before slumps were drawn. Dempster and Mills opened brightly, Dempster being caught at fine leg off a kicking delivery off Wellard. Mills was caught at long off in attempting to hit White. Talbot and Blunt played out time. The New Zealand fielding showed some improvement over that of the last two matches.
